The 2008 Lobsterman will take place on Saturday, September 13th.

This year's event features a weekend of fun! Race on Saturday, enjoy the world class lobsterbake and beer garden, then head into town to take advantage of the great stores and restaurants Freeport has to offer. Be sure to stop into LL Bean's flagship store for a special Lobsterman offer! Once you've gotten your retail therapy, come back down to Winslow Park for a concert that evening! What better way to spend a Saturday night in September than on the ocean, listening to great live music outside? There will be a bonfire and BBQ, so bring the family and enjoy the best Maine has to offer. Then wake up on Sunday and come cheer on the LobsterKids as they race! Book a hotel room in town or camp right at the race venue, but definitely plan to spend the weekend in Freeport.

For more information about accomodations at Winslow Park, please call 207-865-9052 (or 207-865-4198 after Memorial Day).

For more information about staying in Freeport, please call the Merchants Association at 1-207-865-1212 or visit www.freeportusa.com

The Lobsterman Triathlon is one of the most popular destination races in New England, attracting 800 athletes from across the US. Ranked as a Top Race in America by Inside Triathlon, the Lobsterman features a stunning venue on the coast of Freeport, ME. A truly amazing Maine experience, complete with a full lobsterbake following the race, the Lobsterman is as good as triathlon gets.

1.5K Swim (.93 miles)

Starting at the boat launch near the entrance to Winslow park, athletes will do a counterclockwise triangular swim in Casco Bay that finishes at the beach. Average water temperature for September is low to mid-60s.

***Wetsuits: Due to the potentially chilly water all athletes are required to wear a wetsuit when competing in the Lobsterman.

40K Bike (24.7 Miles)

Bike along the coastline of Freeport and into Brunswick. Route is a challenging lollipop shape loop, almost entirely on newly paved roads. There will be a bottle exchange at approximately mile 13.

10K Run (6.2 miles)

Another lollipop loop, leave Winslow park and head through the quaint village of South Freeport before coming back. A strong downhill finish! There will be aid stations with water, Gatorade Endurance, Hammergel, pretzels, soda, and other products at approximately every mile.

Weather

Over the last 5 years, it has only been cloudy/rainy once on race day. The weather in mid-September is typically very stable, with air temps in the 70s by mid-day. It can be chilly (sub-50s) in the early morning, so bring some extra layers (and don't pump up your tires too full!).

Pre-Race Packet Pickup

Packet Pickup will be available on Friday, September 13th from approximately 5pm until 8pm at the Casco Bay YMCA in Freeport. It will also be available on race morning at Winslow Park between 6:30am and 7:30am.

Awards/Categories

Top 3 M/F overall, top 3 in each age group M/F, top relay in each category (men, women, coed), top 3 clydesdale/athena and Aquabike. Please note that clydesdale and athenas are not eligible for age-group awards. Age groups are 19 and under, every 5 years up to 80+.

Lobsterbake

Join your fellow triathletes at a delicious Maine lobsterbake, hosted by Gritty McDuff's of Freeport! Fresh lobster, steamers, corn-on-the-cob, baked potato, etc. plus Gritty's own microbrew (must be 21 to drink). Tickets are $25/person and the lobsterbake will take place immediately following the race at Winslow Park. Plus there will be live entertainment from Maine triathlete Rob Emple! The Beer is free for everyone (who is of legal drinking age, obviously), even if you pass on the lobsterbake.

Timing/Result

The Lobsterman will be chip-timed by Bay State Race Services. You are responsible for your chip and will be charged a fee if it is not returned immediately after the race. Results, including splits, will be available the day after the race.

Race Morning

The 2008 Lobsterman Triathlon will begin at 8:30am. The gates to Winslow Park will open at 4:30am. We encourage athletes to arrive early. All athletes must be in the park by 7:30am, otherwise, they will not be guaranteed parking. There is park entry fee for non-athletes (see below). Please be ready to pay as you enter the park, one of the park staff members will direct you where to park. The Staples Point Road will be closing at 8:00am so please arrive before that time.

Staples Point Road Closure

Staples Point Road will be closed to traffic starting at 8am on race morning. It will reopen when the majority of the athletes are done with the race, approximately 11am. During this time, NO CARS will be allowed to leave Winslow Park. This is for the safety of the athletes and volunteers still on course. Please plan accordingly.

Winslow Park Entry Fee

Everyone who enters Winslow Park is required to pay the entrance fee. The fee is $1 for Freeport Residents, $2 for non-residents. Family, friends, and spectators must be prepared to pay this fee in order to get into the venue. Competitors are covered as part of their entry fee.

Dogs at Winslow Park

Dogs are allowed in the park, but there have been issues in the past with owners leaving their dogs in hot cars or tied up in the sun without water for hours. If you are bringing a dog, please plan accordingly and have someone to take care of your pet. Failure to do so will compromise our ability to have dogs in the park at future races.

Refund Policy

In the event that you cannot participate, we will refund your entry fee minus a $20 handling charge up to July 31. After that, we will give a 50% refund up to August 31. There will be no refunds given after September 1. Please not that we do not consider the Active.com processing fee part of the entry fee. If the event is cancelled, no refunds will be given.

Inclement weather

The event will not be cancelled for any reason other than severe conditions that pose extreme danger to athletes and volunteers. Race Management reserves the right to alter the course in whatever way they deem is in the best interest of the athletes and volunteers. This includes, but is not limited to, shortening or changing the course, removing one of the sports, postponing the start, etc. There are no refunds in the case of weather-caused changes or cancellations. If canceled, the 2007 Lobsterman will not be rescheduled.
