BELGRADE, ME - June 21, 2008 - One hundred and seventy athletes raced across the finish line in the inaugural Belgrade Lakes Triathlon and Duathlon (BLT) at Camp Runoia on Saturday morning, June 21. Clear skies and warm weather brought great athlete and spectator turnout to the scenic event and made the first year of the race a great success.
Aaron Coleman from Portsmouth, New Hampshire took top honors in the triathlon as the men's overall winner with a time of 1:57:01, and Catherine Sterling of Kents Hill, Maine finished first overall among women in 2:11:00.
Warren Gerow of Portland and Kathy Fleury of Winslow, Maine led the men and women in the duathlon division with times of 2:17:52 and 3:10:00 respectively.
The event, which took place on Great Pond in the scenic Belgrade Lakes region, incorporated aspects of the picturesque Camp Runoia setting into the race. (Thought not the surprising quarter-size balls of hail that swept through the Belgrade area Friday night.)
"We're thrilled with the success of the first BLT," says Tri-Maine Race Director Nicole Pisani. "It was a beautiful day and the excitement level of all the athletes was high. The race ran smoothly and safely, thanks in part to the incredible support from the Camp Runoia staff and volunteers."
