The Rangeley Oquossoc Mountain Pursuit - "THE ROMP"
Course Maps now available by clicking tab above The 2008 ROMP will take place on Sunday, August 31st in Rangeley, ME, approximately 2.5 hours from Portland. There will be events all weekend besides the triathlon, including a cookout, a fat-tire mountain bike race, a summit climb up Saddleback, a party at Saddleback base lodge, a kid's race, and lots of other exciting happenings around town. Grab a hotel room or a campsite and spend your Labor Day weekend in beautiful Rangeley. Date: Sunday August 31, 2008 Distances: Swim 1/2 mile, Bike 22 miles, Run 4.4 miles Swim - 1/2 mileStarting from Rangeley Town Park, this 1/2 mile swim is a triangular counter-clockwise course in Rangeley Lake. Water temperatures will be in the mid 60s so wetsuits are highly recommended. Race management has the right to require wetsuits if deemed necessary. Contact Peak Performance Multisport for information about renting wetsuits. It is recommended that you have experience in open-ocean swimming conditions. There will be on-water safety during the race. Race management reserves the right to change or eliminate the swim if deemed unsafe. Bike - 22 milesChallenge yourself against the great Western Mountains of Maine! The ROMP offers an incredible bike course that will push your limits, but reward you with amazing vistas. The first transition will take place on the Town Park fields. Exit left out of the park, and head on route 4 toward Oquossoc. After the turnaround, go right on Mingo Road, then right back onto Route 4, followed by left on Dallas Hill Road. This will lead you up to the Rangeley Lakes Trail Center (RLTC) yurt, where the second transition will take place. This is a challenging bike course, with a number of long climbs and technical descents. Run - 4.5 milesThe point – to – point run is entirely on the Rangeley Lakes Trail System. Athletes will enter the trail from the RLTC lot (T2) and head toward Saddleback Mountain. The last mile of the run features a very challenging climb up to the Base Lodge, but also provides some incredible views of Rangeley Lake. Please note: The ROMP run has some fairly technical parts of the trail (roots, rocks, etc), so it is important that you have some experience with this type of terrain. We recommend that you spend part of your training on trails, in order to develop a comfort on them. Timing The ROMP will be timed by All Sports Events. Full results, including splits, will be available online the same day as the event. Awards Top 3 overall male and female in the Triathlon and Aquabike, top 3 in each age category (every 5 years, starting with U19) in the triathlon. Awards will be presented at the Saddleback Mountain Base Lodge. Gear Bag Because this is a point-to-point race, you will be given a numbered gear bag for your swim stuff. When you arrive at T1 during the race, please put your wetsuit and swim gear in the bag and leave it at your transition spot. We will bring your bag back to the finish area, where you can pick it up after the race. Any gear not securely placed inside a bag will be put in the Lost-And-Found pile at the finish area. Tri-Maine is not responsible for any gear not placed in the official gear bag. Please do not put any non-essential items in the bag.
