This one-day clinic will focus on preparing the experienced or new-to-the-sport triathlete with the essential skills for a faster swim time as well as other hints from experts on aspects of competing in multisport. The clinic will include a timed 450-meter freestyle swim for those needing their most accurate recorded time for the PolarBear Triathlon or for anyone wanting to see what their time is for that distance.
In addition to the swim, participants can attend 45 minute sessions on the following topics:

  • Hydration Seminar with Janet Whatley Blum, USM Professor of Exercise Science  
  • Bike fit Clinic with Gorham Bike & Ski
  • Athlete Self Care Seminar with Julia Kirtland, Core3 Massage

Every participant receives relevant handouts, a sponsor goodie bag, and a chance to participate in the 450-meter freestyle swim including warm-up, lap counting and digital timing. (Staff will help participants convert meters to yards if needed for the PolarBear.)

Timed Swim and Stroke Technique - limited to 120 participants

Swim Stroke Technique with Jeannette Strickland
Greater Portland Swimmers Jeannette Strickland is the coach for the Greater Portland Swimmers (the Masters Swim Program based out of the City of Portland pools). She has worked for the City for almost 20 years as a swim instructor. She has instructed/coached swimmers of all ages and abilities from preschoolers to youth lessons, adult beginners, triathletes and competitive swimmers. Her session at the Triathlon Clinic will include
both dryland and in-water drills focusing on body position and alignment as well as efficient stroke technique.

Timed 450-meter Swim and Video Analysis
Participants will have the chance check their fitness level by swimming 450 meters for time. Each swimmer will have his or her own lane and will be timed by the Colorado Timing System and by backup hand timers. Printed results will be posted. The timed swims will be led by Colleen LePage of Portland Aquatics.

Colleen Lepage is the Aquatic Supervisor for the City of Portland's Recreation Department. She has been involved in competitive swimming for almost 25 years. Her coaching experience includes: Leatherstocking Swim Club (Utica, NY); West Roxbury/Roslindale YMCA (Boston, MA); Twin Cities Swim Team (Lewiston-Auburn, ME); Seacoast Swim Club (Cumberland, ME); and Kennebec Valley YMCA (Augusta, ME). She has taught and/or coached swimmers of all ages. She is a current member of Maine Masters Swim Club and often participates in open water races in the summertime.

Will Thomas and Ted Mitchell will be offering underwater video taping and stroke analysis, using a custom system that offers instant viewing of the video. Both Will and Ted are accomplished swimmers, competing at the collegiate level and consistently producting top swim splits in triathlons.

Minimalistic Running Seminar with Maine Running Company
John Rogers from Maine Running Company provides a Running Specialty Store’s perspective on why runners are making the switch to barefoot and minimalistic running. He’ll provide concrete examples of the many benefits of this “new” running style and describe the key steps one should take to get started.

Athlete Self Care
This clinic focuses on what endurance athletes can do for themselves to reduce their chances of injury. Areas covered will be stretching, icing and self massage. Use of massage tools will be demonstrated, as well as specific injuries discussed.

CORE3 MASSAGE owner Julia Kirtland, Licensed Massage Therapist has over 30 years experience as a runner.  She competed in cross country and track in high school as well as in college, where she won 9 National Div III titles. Her post-collegiate running career culminated with winning the 1997 National Marathon Championships, and qualifying for the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Marathon Trails. She also bike, swim and cross country ski for fun.  Recently she has been competing in triathlons when the mood strikes her.

Most of Julia's clients are triathletes, runners and cyclists. However, she has had the honor of working with many Bowdoin College athletes from a wide range of sports.

The Importance of Hydration for Physical Performance. 
This presentation will include information such as:  how the body maintains fluid balance, problems when an athlete is dehydrated, review of the National Athletic Training Association's guidelines for fluid intake pre, during and post-exercise and pros and cons of water and/or sports drinks. 

Janet Whatley Blum, Sc.D., is an Associate Professor of Exercise Physiology at the University of Southern Maine.  Dr. Whatley Blum earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Maine, her MS in Exercise Physiology from Northeastern University and her doctorate in Nutritional Science from Boston University.  She teaches exercise physiology and sports nutrition courses.  Dr. Whatley Blum?s area of research includes the role of nutrition and exercise on the prevention and treatment of obesity and osteoporosis in adolescents and adults.  She has worked as a consultant to professional, college and high school athletes regarding the relationship of nutrition, weight and athletic performance.

Bike Fit for the Multisport Athlete Presented By Gorham Bike and Ski
In this 45min seminar, Maine’s only industry certified BG Fit technician, Dave Palese, will discuss the method and considerations of proper bike fit as it relates to the multisport athlete. Discussions and demonstrations will include 1.) biomechanics and proper pedal alignment for optimum power transfer, efficiency and injury prevention, 2.) the importance of balancing aerodynamics and comfort, and 3.) proper set-up of a road bike with aero bars, versus a triathlon specific bike.

Cutting-Edge Dryland Training Strategies That Improve Personal Records While Reducing the Risk of Injuries
This 45 minute session will introduce participants to several dryland training concepts which have been proven to increase core strength, enhance dynamic mobility while reducing and preventing short and long-term injuries that prevent you from training or keep you out of the pool.  

During the session you will learn what the best functional training exercises and drills are so that you can drop time, improve the coordination between muscle groups, maintain optimal body position, offset strength imbalances that lead to injury, and maximize your pool training. Participants will leave with a pre-water dynamic routine as well as a functional circuit that can be implemented starting the next day with little to no equipment.

Tim Drown MS, CSCS, NSCA-CPT, ATC, is a nationally certified strength and conditioning specialist and certified athletic trainer with over 20 years of experience in the fitness and athletic development industries. He has received specialized training in the areas of functional strength training, core development, athletic injury prevention, nutrition and supplementation, weight and fat lose, and how to motive, inspire, and empower individuals to reach the goals they seek and deserve. Tim is the founder of To Be A Champion, LLC, a Maine-based company that offersProven Functional Training Systems for Sports, Work, Health & Life.

Triathlon Q & A Session with Elite Athlete Vaughn Cooper
Vaughn Cooper, Ph.D. has been an elite amateur triathlete since 1990 and has completed 16 Ironman-distance triathlons, including six trips to the Hawaii Ironman World Championships. He was a standout swimmer and water polo player in college and coached collegiate water polo from 1996-2003. He has been a USA Triathlon All-American most of his career, whose highlights include a PR of 9:28 in Kona, two age-group victories at Ironman Lake Placid, and top-10 overall finishes at both Ironman Wisconsin and Lake Placid. He and his wife Erika (his coach, and also the coach of master's swimming at UNH) together have advised and coached many triathletes over the years and have directed several clinics for triathletes of various experience levels. Currently residing in Dover, NH, Vaughn is Associate Professor of Microbiology and Genetics at UNH and is a father of Soren, 3, and a baby to be.

Maine Multisport Roundtable (MMR)  
The goal of the MMR is to become a “gathering” of endurance athletes and coaches to discuss topics on all endurance subjects. The MMR is open to all Maine athletes with a focus on endurance sports (triathletes, cyclist, runners, nordic skiers, etc). The panel and the subject will change at each “gathering”; the goal of the moderator is to keep the presenters and the audience within the scope of the subject for that given MMR. The MMR is presented by Personal Best Multisport Coaching, a professional endurance coaching company based in Maine, and moderated by Kurt Perham.

There is no charge to attend the MMR, which will be taking place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
