Please note: Forecasts are calling for very cold temperatures combined with potentially strong winds, starting in the afternoon. It is critical that all participants are appropriately dressed. There will be shuttles available to transport clothing and gear from the start of both the short and long courses to the finish (at Bullwinkle's).

Join us on Tuesday, December 29th for a twilight adventure.

Start at the bottom of the mountain and follow the flares up to the finish at Bullwinkle’s.

Choose between the Short Course (1 mile) and Long Course (5 mile) options:

Short Course - start at the base of the SuperQuad and climb 1 mile to the finish. Race on showshoes or skis.

Long Course - Start at the Outdoor Center, ski 2 miles to the bottom of Whiffletree (the Sugarloaf Inn), then climb up to the top of Spillway Crosscut, and finally ski down Tote Road to the finish. Only nordic skis are allowed on the trail from the Outdoor Center to the base lodge, and only skis with metal edges are allowed on the mountain.

The Event

General Information

The Moonlight Climb is a unique event based on the classic Randonee races that are popular in Europe ("randonee" is French for "excursion" - click here for more info). There are two different point-to-point routes that offer varying levels of difficulty. The short course race is a pure hillclimb, starting at the base of Sugarloaf and following a marked trail up the mountain to the finish. The long course combines a 2-mile nordic ski with a hillclimb, capped off by a short ski down to the finish (closer to the true Randonee concept). There is also a relay option for the long course, which allows one athlete to do the nordic ski while the other does the climb.

Three different race options:

  • Short course individual – ski or snowshoe
  • Long course individual – Nordic, then AT/Telemark
  • Long course relay – Nordic (first member), then AT/Telemark (second member)

Note: There will be a Cat bringing skis and gear from the start at the SuperQuad to the finish at Bullwinkle's. If you would like to have something transported up, please drop it off before 4:15 pm at the SuperQuad. Long Course participants can leave gear at the Inn (for the transition) or at the Outdoor Center to be transported to the finish.
