Ideal Weather and a Scenic Location Make the Family-friendly Pirate Triathlon at Point Sebago a Successful First-Time Event.
CASCO, ME – June 7, 2009 – On Sunday morning, three hundred athletes and kids competed in the first-ever Pirate Triathlon at Point Sebago. The successful event raised over $8,500 for Camp Sunshine – a retreat for terminally ill children and their families – and showcased a spectacular venue on Sebago Lake.
Kurt Perham, from Brunswick, Maine, finished first with a time of 1:01:19, and Catherine Sterling of Kents Hill, Maine came in first overall among women in 1:07:23. (Both Perham and Sterling placed first earlier this season as well, in the PolarBear Triathlon and Duathlon in Brunswick.)
Competitors ranged in age from 17-68, with 85 percent of the athletes competing residing in Maine. The field included Brian Bishop – a 33-year-old racer who lost over 120 pounds after having a heart attack at 28, Ann and David Coddington – a husband and wife racing together on their 17th anniversary, and Mike Smith – Camp Sunshine’s Director of Special Events – who raced for the first time on his 40th birthday.
Camp Sunshine volunteers and staff joined with Point Sebago homeowners to help run the family-friendly event. Spectators mingled with singing Pirates as they cheered racers through the open water swim and across the finish line on the beach. A big highlight of the day included the kids races, drawing 27 racers between the ages of 3-13 and big cheers from the crowd.
“Today’s event was something really special,” says Tri-Maine Race Director Will Thomas. “The weather was ideal, the venue was stunning, and there was a unique cohesion to the way Camp Sunshine, Point Sebago, and all of Tri-Maine’s athletes came together. Everyone really enjoyed the day, and the fact that we helped raise money to support a great cause made it even more meaningful.”

Tri-Maine is pleased to introduce our beneficiary for The Pirate Tri at Point Sebago:
Camp Sunshine is a year-round retreat, which provides respite, support, joy and hope to children with life-threatening illnesses and their immediate families through various stages of a child’s illness. The program is free of charge to all families, and includes 24-hour onsite medical and psychosocial support. Families of children diagnosed with diseases such as cancer, kidney disease, lupus, solid organ transplants, and other life threatening illnesses attend one of the week-long camps. Bereavement groups are also offered for families who have lost a child to an illness.
Since its founding in 1984, the camp has had the distinction of being one of the only programs in the nation whose mission is to address the impact of a life threatening illness on every member of the immediate family—the ill child, the parents, and the siblings. Over the past twenty-five years, Camp Sunshine has provided a haven for over 20,000 family members from around the world and from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Camper Spotlight: Meet Leah Van Beveren
Leah Van Beveren is a 5-year-old from Texas who became a pirate for Halloween at Camp Sunshine.

Leah was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma – a rare tumor of the eye that usually affects children under three years of age – when she was only eight weeks old. Leah has bravely battled cancer and undergone chemotherapy, laser treatments, and a surgery to remove her left eye (at just under a year old). Leah attended Camp Sunshine with her family in 2007 and 2008 and is hoping to attend again in 2009.
Support Camp Sunshine
We’re hoping Leah and her family get another opportunity at Camp Sunshine. We’re also hoping lots of other children like Leah do too. That’s why we’re so excited about this race! Just by signing up for The Pirate Tri you are helping support Camp Sunshine and the wonderful work they do.
Camp Sunshine’s goal is to raise in excess of $25,000 in 2009 with the help of events like The Pirate Tri: that is enough to send more than 16 families to Camp!

Help us send more families to Camp Sunshine!
At Tri-Maine, we have made it our goal to send four families to camp this summer – beyond proceeds from the race – and we need your help! We know what a great athlete community we have and we’d love your help to raise $4,000.
You can simply make an additional donation, or create your own fundraising page and get your family and friends involved in supporting your goals. All individual fundraising donations will go toward our Tri-Maine fund.
