Date: Sunday August 31, 2008

Start Time: 8:00 A.M.

Where: Starting at Rangeley Town Park, T2 at Rangeley Lakes Trail Center, Finishing at Saddleback Mountain Base Lodge.

Distances: Swim 1/2 mile, Bike 22 miles, Run 4.8 miles

Swim 1/2 mile: Starting from Rangeley Town Park, this 1/2 mile swim is a triangular counter-clockwise course in Rangeley Lake.  Water temperatures will be in the mid 60s so wetsuits are highly recommended. Race management has the right to require wetsuits if deemed necessary. Contact Peak Performance Multisport for information about renting wetsuits. It is recommended that you have experience in open-water swimming conditions. There will be on-water safety during the race. Race management reserves the right to change or eliminate the swim if deemed unsafe.

Bike 22 miles: Challenge yourself against the great Western Mountains of Maine! The ROMP offers an incredible bike course that will push your limits, but reward you with amazing vistas.

The first transition will take place on the Town Park fields. Exit left out of the park, and head on route 4 toward Oquossoc. After the turnaround, go right on Mingo Road, then right back onto Route 4, followed by left on Dallas Hill Road. This will lead you up to the Rangeley Lakes Trail Center (RLTC) yurt, where the second transition will take place.  This is a challenging bike course, with a number of long climbs and technical descents.

Run 4.8 miles: The point – to – point run is entirely on the Rangeley Lakes Trail System.  Athletes will enter the trail from the RLTC lot (T2) and head toward Saddleback Mountain. The last mile of the run features a very challenging climb up to the Base Lodge, but also provides some incredible views of Rangeley Lake.

Please note: The ROMP run has some fairly technical parts of the trail (roots, rocks, etc), so it is important that you have some experience with this type of terrain. We recommend that you spend part of your training on trails, in order to develop a comfort on them.

Timing/Results:
Timing will be done by All Sports Events and results will be included on their website (www.allsportsevents.com) a few hours after the race. Results will be broken down into swim, bike, run, and overall time. Transition times will be included in the bike time, so you are responsible for recording your own transition splits.

Awards:
Top 3: Male/Female overall in the Triathlon and Aquabike.
Top 3 in each age category (every 5 years and U-19)
Awards will be presented at the Saddleback Mountain Base Lodge at approximately 11:30. Top male and top female winners receive a complimentary stay in Saddlebacks mountainside condos for a weekend.

Pre-Race Logistics:
Race Packet Pickup Info:
There will be race packet pickup Saturday, August 30th from 5:00pm to 6:00pm at the town park in Rangeley. Last minute race packet pickup (NOT recomended) will happen Sunday from 6:00 am to 7:00 am.

Race Packets include your race bib number and bike number, swim cap for your assigned wave, and a high quality customized t-shirt. Athletes will also get a bag to put their gear in after the swim. An athlete Guide with detailed information about the race will be emailed to you the week of August 22nd and will also be available to download here at that time.

Transition Area: You will be able to drop off your bike on race morning at the Rangeley Town Park (T1), then you will need to drop off your run gear at the Rangeley Lakes Trail Center (T2). Finally, you will park near the finish area at the Saddleback Base Lodge. There will be shuttle buses available to transport you from the parking area back to the Town Park Beach for the start..

Gear Bag: Because this is a point-to-point race, you will be given a numbered gear bag for your swim stuff. When you arrive at T1 during the race, please put your wetsuit and swim gear in the bag and leave it at your transition spot. We will bring your bag back to the finish area, where you can pick it up after the race. Any gear not securely placed inside a bag will be put in the Lost-And-Found pile at the finish area. Tri-Maine is not responsible for any gear not placed in the official gear bag. Please do not put any non-essential items in the bag.

Recommended Schedule for Race Morning:
5:30am-6:15am: Arrive at Town Park to drop off bike and cycling gear. DON'T FORGET TO LEAVE YOUR GEAR BAG! There will be packet pick-up that morning at the Park. PLEASE NOTE: There is no parking available for athletes at the Park! You are required to take shuttle buses to the start from the Saddleback Mountain parking lot, or get a ride from friends/family. There is some parking for spectators at the race start.

6:15am-6:45am: Drop off running gear at T2 (At Rangeley Lakes Trail center).

6:45-7:15am: Park car at upper Saddleback Mountain parking lot and hop on shuttle back to Town Park.

7:30am: Last shuttle bus leaves parking area for swim start. If you miss it, you need to find a ride.

8:00am: RACE BEGINS!

Post-Race Logistics:
Following the race, you should drive back to T2, approximately 1 mile down the road from the finish, to collect your bike and gear. T2 will be monitored by race officials until all bikes are taken. Gear bags with your swim gear will be delivered to the designated Gear Bag Claim area near the finish line.

Celebration Cookout: There is no better way to enjoy your triumph of the ROMP than with a delicious BBQ! Saddleback will be hosting a post-race meal that will feature chicken, burgers, salads, and much more. Cookout will begin shortly after the race at approximately noon. Tickets are $20 or $50 for a family. Kids under 10 are $10. Tickets can be purchased with registration or by sending a check for $20 per ticket to our office at 164 Middle Street, Suite 4, Portland, Maine 04101

Party at Saddleback on Sunday Night: Join your fellow athletes for a fun-filled night at the Swig 'N Smelt after the race. Swap stories, enjoy drinks, and watch a slide show from the day - A great way to keep the energy alive.

USAT Sanctioning:
The 2008 ROMP Triathlon will be sanctioned by USA Triathlon. If you are not an annual member of USA Triathlon, you will need to purchase a $10 one-day membership when you register and fill out a USAT waiver which you can download here.

Rules: Please look over the USAT competitive rules - you are responsible for understanding them and abiding by them. They are available at www.usatriathlon.org.

Relays: Relays are required to tag off at their designated bike rack spot only. The cyclist cannot remove the bike from the rack before being tagged by the swimmer. The cyclist cannot tag the runner before re-racking the bike. The overall time for a relay will be the aggregate of times for each of the members.

Weather:
The event will not be cancelled for any reason other than severe conditions that pose extreme danger to athletes and volunteers. Race Management reserves the right to alter the course in whatever way they deem is in the best interest of the athletes and volunteers. This includes, but is not limited to, shortening or changing the course, removing one of the sports, postponing the start, etc. There are no refunds in the case of weather-caused changes or cancellations. If canceled, the 2008 ROMP will not be rescheduled.
