Bike:
14 mile lollipop course with varied terrain, including two climbs, on low traffic country roads. Enjoy views of Mount Washington and Sebago Lake. There are no aid stations, but there will be lead and sweep vehicles. All athletes must be off the course by 10:30am. If you are not finished with the bike leg by that time, you will be picked up by a sweep vehicle and returned to the transition area. You will be allowed to finish the rest of the race, but your time will be considered unofficial and you will not be eligible for awards.

Run:
3 mile course through the resort, slightly uphill on the way out and downhill on the way back. There will be aid stations approximately every 1 mile.

Transition Area
There will be one Transition Area, located in Lot C, adjacent to the beach. The transition area will open at 6:30am on race morning and will be closed approximately 15 minutes before the start of the first wave. Only volunteers, staff, and registered athletes are allowed into the Transition Area at any time. You must be bodymarked before entering Transition (relays included), and have a safe, approved helmet and will have their bikes inspected for USAT compliance. Once you complete the race, you will not be allowed back into the Transition Area until all of the cyclists are back, or the bike time cutoff is reached.

Finish
The Pirate Tri finishes along the waterfront, between the lake and the lagoon. It is a short walk from the transition area and provides spectacular views of Sebago. There is a large tent set up for the post-race festivities, which will take place regardless  of the weather.

Relays:
Relay members are required to hand off the timing chip after each leg of the race. The handoff takes place at their designated bike rack spot only. The cyclist cannot remove the bike from the rack before being tagged by the swimmer. The cyclist cannot tag the runner before re-racking the bike. The overall time for a relay will be the aggregate of times for each of the members.

Timing
Professional chip timing will be provided by All Sports Events. Every athlete and relay team will receive a timing chip to be worn around the ankle. Participants will receive times for swim, bike, run, T1, T2, and finish.

Results
Official results will be posted by Sunday evening, following the event.

Tri-Maine is pleased to introduce our beneficiary for The Pirate Tri at Point Sebago:

Camp Sunshine is a year-round retreat, which provides respite, support, joy and hope to children with life-threatening illnesses and their immediate families through various stages of a child’s illness. The program is free of charge to all families, and includes 24-hour onsite medical and psychosocial support. Families of children diagnosed with diseases such as cancer, kidney disease, lupus, solid organ transplants, and other life threatening illnesses attend one of the week-long camps. Bereavement groups are also offered for families who have lost a child to an illness.

Since its founding in 1984, the camp has had the distinction of being one of the only programs in the nation whose mission is to address the impact of a life threatening illness on every member of the immediate family—the ill child, the parents, and the siblings. Over the past twenty-five years, Camp Sunshine has provided a haven for over 20,000 family members from around the world and from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Camper Spotlight:  Meet Leah Van Beveren

Leah Van Beveren is a 5-year-old from Texas who became a pirate for Halloween at Camp Sunshine.

Leah was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma – a rare tumor of the eye that usually affects children under three years of age – when she was only eight weeks old. Leah has bravely battled cancer and undergone chemotherapy, laser treatments, and a surgery to remove her left eye (at just under a year old). Leah attended Camp Sunshine with her family in 2007 and 2008 and is hoping to attend again in 2009.

 Support Camp Sunshine

We’re hoping Leah and her family get another opportunity at Camp Sunshine. We’re also hoping lots of other children like Leah do too. That’s why we’re so excited about this race! Just by signing up for The Pirate Tri you are helping support Camp Sunshine and the wonderful work they do.

Camp Sunshine’s goal is to raise in excess of $25,000 in 2009 with the help of events like The Pirate Tri: that is enough to send more than 16 families to Camp!
